Tana: Stuart, Cheffs, Mark, Raymond. Who *is* that guy in the foreground? I'm going to kick myself when I finally remember. This was the trip where we made a raft of bamboo and tires tubes. The girls went on it first, where the river was very wide and very slow. Always ready for a fight, I insisted on going with the guys on the second part. We went over a four-foot waterfall and lost our steering poles, then we saw hippos up ahead. For one reason or another they decided to ignore us. We decided to ignore the croc that slipped into the river a little later. Then the river started to get narrower and narrower and the shore got rocky and higher. It wasn't until the water got to an alarming speed that Dave Harries mentioned he had never been there before and didn't actually know what lay ahead. I think it was Anthony Cheffings who jumped off to scout ahead. He reappeared at the top of a cliff shouting for us to get off the raft. Everyone made it to shore while I was still debating whether to risk the croc or whatever lay ahead. Somebody was coming back to get me, so I dove for the side. It's good thing, too, because although the raft made it across an enormous boulder in the river, it made it in two or three pieces. Those were the days! |
